The news of the University of Nigeria Unsukka’s first ever 5-seater electric Car in Nigeria must have wowed a few million people…well, I’m not one of them.

Honestly, I think it’s all a load of BS.

Don’t be in a hurry to crucify me just yet. I have a point and I’ll get to it in a bit.

Electric Cars in Nigeria: A study of the Wild Wild West.

Electric cars are vehicles that are propelled by one or more electric motors. Like mechanical cars, they use energy stored in rechargeable batteries.

Perhaps the reason why I ever knew the car company, Tesla was because of it’s electric cars. As it turns out, the Tesla Model S along with the Nissan Leaf are the two most sold electric vehicles in the world with over 400,000 units sold worldwide by June 2019.

We need to be more ashamed of ourselves in Nigeria sha O. It’s 2019 and we’re rejoicing haven made one 5 seater electric car that as a matter of fact really resembles a Keke Napep but on 4 wheels.

Meanwhile, the first attempt at a practical production electric car was invented in London since 1884 (i wonder who amongst you had been born by then).

Charging docks and stations

Go round cities that have begun adopting these type if vehicles and have a look. Shame will catch you.

As at 2018, the U.S. had approximately 57,000 charging outlets and 20,000 charging stations for plug-in electric vehicles. That was last year in the U.S alone.

A post on Futurism.com a few hours ago read that Futurism UK had plans to install electric car chargers in all new Homes from now henceforth.

Another read that an Indian company, Vakrangee also plans to set up electric vehicle charging stations across India.

Yet another announced that China had recently surpass 1 Million electric charging stations as of June 2019.

This is Nigeria: The reality.

Now here’s the stark contrast: Welcome back to Nigeria, where the Nigerian University of Nsukka is rejoicing about making the Nation’s first ever 5 seater electric vehicle – in 2019.

Now for all of you already reading my article and wondering what sort of sarcastic guy wrote this, just riddle me this: how do you suppose we gon charge the electric car?

With this useless power supply? No tell me na.

You think light in your area has improved? Guess again. Premium Times recently reported that power generation in the national grid has in fact plummeted from about 3,231 MW last Wednesday to 2,919MW. I haven’t had electricity for a month plus.

Where are the charging docks on the road? Street lights are hardly ever on and there are already long ass queues in the Petrol stations, not to talk about the occasional scarcity there of.

So I ask again, how are we going to charge the electric cars? It’s definitely not with your phone power bank.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the world has practically left us behind in technology and we’re playing catch up. As far as they’re concerned, we’re still in the Stone ages.

So next time you see a post like “University Of Nigeria Unveils First Five-seater Electric Car…”, don’t rejoice like the simpletons do – weep for this Nation.
